Professional Headshots and Personal Branding: My Conversation on Unstoppable After 50

Why Your Photo Is the First Impression of Your Personal Brand

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of joining my friend and client Mike Capuzzi on his podcast Unstoppable After 50 for a conversation about something that quietly shapes how people perceive us in business long before a word is spoken.

Our photographs.

Mike opened the conversation with a point that I have seen proven again and again during nearly three decades behind the camera. Before someone reads your credentials, reviews your experience, or hears you speak, they see your image.

They see it on LinkedIn, your website, on networking platforms, and conference pages.

Most often, this image is your make or break introduction.

Why AI Headshots Still Miss the Mark

And yet I still meet accomplished professionals who are representing themselves with photos that no longer reflect who they are today. Sometimes the image is eight or ten years old. Sometimes it is a quick phone snapshot taken in an office hallway. More recently, we have all seen an increasing number of AI generated headshots that look convincing at first glance, but something feels slightly disconnected once you spend a moment with them.

The subtle details that communicate presence, confidence, and authenticity are simply not there.

For professionals over fifty, this becomes even more important.

By this stage in life, you have built something real. Decades of experience. Hard lessons learned. A reputation that carries weight in your industry and community. Your photograph should support that story, not quietly work against it.

Headshots vs Branding Photography

During the episode Mike and I talked about the difference between a simple headshot and a full branding session. A headshot is often the clean introduction. A strong, confident portrait that works across LinkedIn profiles, speaking engagements, and company websites. Branding photography goes deeper. It begins to show the environment you work in, the personality you bring to your profession, and the visual language that represents your personal brand.

Simple Ways to Prepare for a Professional Headshot Session

We also spent time discussing preparation. The small details that help people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Wardrobe choices. Expression coaching. The importance of creating a relaxed environment so the person in front of the lens can show up as themselves rather than performing for the camera.

That human connection is something technology has not been able to replicate. A real photograph comes from conversation, trust, and the ability to read subtle moments as they unfold.

What I appreciated most was hearing Mike’s perspective after receiving his final images. He spoke openly about how powerful it felt to finally have photographs that matched the stage of life and leadership he is in today. That reaction is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

A strong portrait is not vanity.

It is a business asset.

If you are a professional who has not updated your headshot in several years, it may be time to take another look at how you are showing up visually in the world.
